About Threaded Notes

This mixed media contemporary assemblage resembles a vessel and is designed to be hung on a wall.

The exquisitely detailed contemporary compositions of Alice Vander Vennen are designed to tell a powerful story about people, place and time. Vander Vennen’s background in sculpture is evident in the 2-D quality of her wall tapestries filled with found objects in rich colours and visible textures. She begins each sculptural composition with textiles, both new and archival, selected for their colour and design. Layer upon layer of textiles cut and assembled along with found objects—copper and wire. The textiles flank a canoe-like shape formed from burnished copper—a powerful symbol of ‘life’s journey.’ These framed pieces can be hung horizontally or vertically.

“I feel like a quilter who is playing with colour, or I feel like I’m painting with textiles. And when I go for a walk, I’m always finding things. These (found objects) are little diary pieces. It feels like I’m collecting little moments in time.”
