About November 7, 1985
This contemporary abstract painting is by Carol Sutton.Early in her career, Carol Sutton discovered the power of colour as an expressive visual language. In the 1970s, Sutton was regarded as one of Canada’s finest abstract artists. Here, lyrical passages of expressive brushstrokes and curated markings give this predominantly green composition its lively energy.
The colour palette appears to be rooted in nature. Earth tones offer contrast to the pale and dark greens highlighted by white accents.
“Whenever I look at a painting by Carol Sutton, I always find myself re-asking that old question, 'What is abstract painting?" That question is right up there with questions like "What is God?" That's how I know I'm looking at a good painting.” Donna Lypchuk, Art Critic
