About Peppermint
This colourful contemporary abstract painting is by Carol Sutton. In the 1970s, the paintings of a young Carol Sutton caught the attention of one of America’s best-known art critics, Clement Greenberg, who visited her studio often. The prolific artist was known for creating large-scale works painted on canvases that were placed on the floor. Sutton was appreciated for her bold use of colour and her intuitive understanding of light. This piece showcases deliciously fresh ‘peppermint’ colours—pinks, greens, red, and white that flow in fluid lines across the canvas. The intense colours are grounded by the addition of chocolate brown and black.
“Whenever I look at a painting by Carol Sutton, I always find myself re-asking that old question, 'What is abstract painting?" That question is right up there with questions like "What is God?" That's how I know I'm looking at a good painting.” Donna Lypchuk, Art Critic
