About To See the World in a Grain of Sand 2
This contemporary table top, clear and black glass piece, is by Cheryl Wilson Smith. These elegant collections of sculptural glass pieces are technically very challenging to create and underscore the superb craftsmanship of Cheryl Wilson Smith’s art. The award-winning glass artist had thought about creating these pieces for a long time. Encasing her signature fine layers of blown glass frit in clear glass when both are hot is very difficult. The result is a unique series—a smooth, clear glass globe (the world) housing a piece of Wilson Smith’s textured glass frit—a ‘stone’ in a neutral hue. The globe sits elevated on a tall, curved pedestal of black glass.
One of a series.
“I love collecting stones, as do many of my friends, and I am often in awe and wonder of what that simple-looking stone went through, both geologically ( pressure and forces) and historically. And when you hold the sphere that the " stone" is encased in, up to a window, you see the optics of the landscape outside. It is condensed and inverted. ( so you are seeing the world).” Cheryl Wilson Smith
“(I am) drawn to how the piece uses layers of material to visually and tactilely capture the texture of time…” Susie Silbert, Glass Curator, USA
