About Ce bleu du jour (Today’s Blue)

This contemporary indoor abstract sculpture has a geometric form made from steel.

Internationally recognized as a superb and innovative sculptor with a bold aesthetic, Claude Millette’s work has graced both indoor and outdoor spaces in Europe, the U.S. and here in Canada. The Quebec artist is known for his imaginative abstract work that often plays with the viewer’s perception of balance and imbalance. His extensive oeuvre favours metal as a medium and are mostly non-figurative in form. This is one of a series of geometric sculptures that appear to resemble tumbling dice—each stacked cube differs in size and is placed at precarious angles to one another. The hand-forged steel is coated in a glossy royal blue that serves to accentuate its dynamic form.

“My work is a continuation of my research on captivity and movement. These two seemingly contradictory themes are at the very basis of my vocabulary and my approach. These antagonists fuel a constant desire to experiment with materials: that of infusing sensuality into raw and forbidding materials such as steel, stainless steel or bronze. I chose these materials for their plastic and aesthetic qualities, for their durability and also by affinity.” Claude Millette

Claude Millette was born in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. He studied at the École de sculpture de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli and apprenticed with revered sculptors Robert Poulin and Jordi Bonet. Millette's works have been commissioned for many public art projects and have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Mexico.
