About L'Envol II
This modern abstract sculpture is made from steel and its form was inspired by nature. The contemporary sculptural work of Quebec artist Claude Millette has been lauded internationally for its bold original vision. Known best for working in steel, this piece is one of a series influenced by the natural world. Five elegantly curved petal-like shapes forged from mild steel in different sizes are grouped in a dynamic composition. The patina is a warm golden brown, an appropriate palette for an object that has organic origins. A large version of this sculpture can be found in a Montreal neighbourhood park. L’envol means ‘flight’ in French.
“Though staunchly non-figurative, my productions are not strictly abstractions per se: from the moment the gesture expresses an emotion or a reflection, the work is imbued with feeling.” Claude Millette
Claude Millette was born in Saint-Hyacinthe Quebec. He studied at the École de sculpture de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli and apprenticed with revered sculptors Robert Poulin and Jordi Bonet. Millette's works have been commissioned for many public art projects and have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Mexico. Millette was one of 14 artists recently invited to create work in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the historic Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours in Montreal, Quebec.
