Hughes pays homage to classical painting techniques with a loose hand. Bold, modulated colour brushstrokes showcases formal composition in a new and refreshing light. Since graduating from the New York Academy of Art MFA program in 1995, his work has been featured in solo shows throughout Canada, England and the US. Since 2000, Hughes has taught and lectured in North America. A recipient of numerous awards, including the Elizabeth Greenshields Award for Figurative Art (1991 and 1995), Hughes was also accepted in a prestigious group show (2005) at The National Portrait Gallery in London, England.
