About Proud to be Canadian No 1

This contemporary outdoor figurative sculpture is of three metal maple leaves.

This iconic image of a maple leaf, a national symbol, was hand-cut by a Canadian artist, Danny Perkins.
Working out of his family farm in rural Quebec, Perkins has been creating sculptural art in metal, wood and stone for more than ten years. His inspiration is nature—in theme, and simple form-familiar imagery he’s been around all his life. This is one of a series that features three maple leaves in different sizes, masterfully cut from steel and anchored in stone. The sculpture is finely detailed, with silhouettes that allow the landscape, the earth, and the sky to be seen through them. It appears to be blowing in the wind.

“His strength lies in using minimalist lines and giving a lightness effect to his pieces, even though they are made of raw materials such as iron and wood. He designs almost exclusively all his pieces by hand. For him, it is a way to make them more organic and to make them radiate a beautiful positive energy.” Galerie Perkins
