About Mondrian and Beyond No.1 - Yellow
This contemporary abstract oil painting in yellow is one of David Sorensen’s Mondrian series. The title of this work is an homage to one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Dutch born Pieter Mondrian was one of the pioneers of abstract art known for his iconic geometric form. Sorensen’s interpretation has softened the classic Mondrian lines by creating a tactile, painterly edge in his own bright palette of blues, white, orange and yellow.
This work echoes the structural integrity of Mondrian’s style and the thick impasto layers in expressive brushstrokes of light brown with a central passage of yellow add visible depth and atmosphere. A single bright yellow square in the lower right corner honours Mondrian’s modernist vision.
“I’m tapping into something new to me, and that enables a multi-view of the inner voice.” David Sorensen
“Through the medium of his art, a bridge is built between inner sensation and outer world experience, illusion and reality, what we cannot see and what we see, life and afterlife.” John K. Grande, Montreal poet and writer
