Biography
Although born in Vancouver, Deborah Samuel grew up in Toronto and Ireland where she eventually studied art at Limerick College of Art and Design. She returned to Canada to study photography at Sheridan College, Oakville, Ontario.
Samuel developed a distinctive style that was quickly embraced in fashion and entertainment. She has produced intuitive and intense portraits of celebrities, musicians and writers including Leonard Cohen, Margaret Atwood, Rush and Queen Noor. Her work has appeared in GQ, Rolling Stone, Esquire, Spin and Entertainment Weekly. She has directed music videos for numerous record companies.
In her photography, Samuel has focused on portrait studies of animals -- horses, dogs, birds -- and the natural world. She has published several books of her dynamic images: Dog, Pup, The Extraordinary Beauty of Birds and Elementals.
Samuel has lectured and led photography workshops throughout North America. Her work is held in private and corporate collections.
