About Stargazer

This indoor tabletop sculpture of a bear is carved from red Travertine stone.

When Canadian sculptor Doug Robinson first works with a chunk of stone, he says he allows the stone to ‘speak’ and lead the way in inspiring what he will carve. This bear is created from a beautiful piece of Persian red travertine, a limestone material imported from Iran, its distinctive rich colour subtly flecked with white.
As a young man in the 1970s, Robinson first apprenticed with local masters in Italy and was so impressed by the natural beauty and the availability of material that he chose to live there. His studio sits amidst olive groves adjacent to the Italian mountains where marble has been mined for more than 2,000 years. Robinson works with organic, figurative, animistic and landscape forms. The volumptuous curves and fluid lines of this piece are enhanced by its highly polished and refined finish.

“I get the stone, and I’m not sure until I have the stone. The stone decided on its limitations and volume, how things were going to start and where they would go so that I could take away the least amount of stone and create the most amount of expression.” Doug Robinson

Doug Robinson studied sculpture at the Ontario College of Art and Design, the University of Guelph and in Italy. His work—sculptures in limestone, travertine and marble have been exhibited in France, Germany, London, Montreal and Prince Edward County, Ontario.
