About The Soloist 2/9
A love of playing and listening to music inspired this classically beautiful figurative sculpture by Frances Semple. The Canadian artist actually plays several instruments herself including a violin and even studied music at the Royal Conservatory for many years. Semple’s violinist, carved from textured hydrostone (a mix of concrete and crushed rock) wearing a formal gown stands, violin tucked into the nape of her neck, the bow in her other hand. The palette is neutral and enhances the fine details.“This is the moment before the soloist begins, listening to the opening bars and waiting for her entrance.” Frances Semple
Frances Semple was born in 1956 in Scotland and grew up in Brampton, Ontario. After high school she moved to Toronto and studied sculpture and mould making at the Ontario College of Art and continued her studies in Florence, Italy and Edinburgh, Scotland. She acquired a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver. She has exhibited throughout Canada and in the U.S. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections.
