In mixed media, Heather Hietala’s intriguing work tells a story in symbol and metaphor about life’s journeys and change. A canoe-shaped ceramic vessel in light brown; the interior pierced by a darning needle sits on a white floating shelf below a composition on paper. The image on paper repeats the canoe shape in sepia and sienna as leaves or petals coming from a vase shape that is outlined in hand-stitched threads.
“My imagination never stops wondering about the human predicament. What does taking one path mean, if another is left barren? How do we express ourselves when we feel caught between worlds, both familiar and unfamiliar? What compels us to grow, to leap? Mixed media artwork helps me explore and express these questions from a variety of angles.” Heather Hietala
