Biomorphic No 17 Jana Osterman

Carved and Scorched Catalpa Wood, Stain and Mineral Oil
15 × 16 × 22 inches
38.1 × 40.64 × 55.88 cm

As if discovered on a walk in the forest, this hand carved wooden sculpture emulates shapes seen in nature. Osterman first scorched the catalpa wood to draw out the three-dimensional texture of the wood grain prior to staining it to a deep lustrous black. Osterman’s biomorphic work is intended to evoke images of living things whether plants or humans. The holes in this piece underscore its natural, organic inspiration. “This series of carved wood pieces was an exploration of textured biomorphic forms, using the wood growth lines as an addition to the rhythmic, shape shifting topography.”Jana Osterman Born in Slovenia, Jana Osterman moved to Holland where she studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. She continued with printmaking studies in England. For the last 20 years, Osterman has worked as a full-time artist and fabricator in Canada, first in Toronto and now in Prince Edward County, Ontario. Osterman’s artworks, including public commissions, are held in collections in Canada, Slovenia, Germany, England and Dubai.
