About Untitled

This is a one-of-a-kind gouache and India ink work on paper by Jean-Paul Riopelle, one of Canada’s most significant and influential artists of the twentieth century. The Quebec-born artist earned an international reputation as an innovative abstract expressionist.

Created in 1953, this piece exemplifies Riopelle’s distinctive ‘mosaic’ style, with vibrant, layered colors and textured applications that convey movement and depth. His unique technique results in a work that is both visually dynamic and richly textured, capturing his innovative spirit and deep connection to nature.

Jean-Paul Riopelle, CC GOQ RCA (October 7, 1923 – March 12, 2002) was a Canadian painter and sculptor from Quebec. He had one of the longest and most important international careers of the sixteen signatories of the Refus Global, the 1948 manifesto that announced the Quebecois artistic community's refusal of clericalism and provincialism.
