About Jeu d'atouts

This contemporary figurative oil painting was created by Jennifer Hornyak.

As a young artist, Jennifer Hornyak’s scenes of Montreal personalities were exhibited in the 1987 Paris World Exhibition. Her paintings appeared alongside famous artists such as Pablo Picasso. This is one of her earlier works—an expressive figurative piece that captures an intimate scene (in a restaurant or a nightclub?) between one woman and two men dressed in evening clothes.
The title translates as ‘trump card game.’ Throughout her decades-long career, Hornyak has garnered international praise for her superb sense of colour and gestural form. She has always favoured a jewel tone palette that reflects her love of the old masters.

“I like rich dark palettes that echo the classics but are rendered in a more contemporary, abstract way.” Jennifer Hornyak

Jennifer Hornyak studied at the Grimsby School of Art in England. In 1961, she moved to Montreal, where she attended McGill University, the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal and the Centre Saidye Bronfman. Hornyak has exhibited throughout North America and Europe, including the Paris World Exhibition in 1987, where her work was shown alongside that of Modigliani, Picasso and van Dongen. Hornyak’s work is represented in many private and corporate collections, including Bombardier Transport, Burroughs Wellcome, McCarthy Tétrault, Power Corporation and Hyatt Regency Hotel.
