The discriminating palette of Canadian artist Jennifer Hornyak’s artwork speaks to a lifelong appreciation for the rich colors found in the paintings of French Fauvists like Matisse. Hornyak’s floral series often features unusually dark colors, such as this navy blue vase that holds a bouquet of moss green, soft melon, and golden flowers. The background stands out as a rich brown. Hornyak’s method involves using layer upon layer of oil paint applied in expressive strokes and a heavy glaze—both adding visible depth and texture to the work.

Jennifer Hornyak studied at the Grimsby School of Art in England. In 1961, she moved to Montreal where she attended McGill University, the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, and the Centre Saidye Bronfman. Hornyak has exhibited throughout North America and Europe. Her work is represented in many private and corporate collections including Bombardier Transport, Burroughs Wellcome, McCarthy Tétrault, Power Corporation, and Hyatt Regency Hotel.
