About Ultramarine with Cream White

This abstract oil painting of a floral still life is by a Canadian artist.

Rich colours, expressive brushstrokes, and abstracted forms characterize the elegant contemporary art of Jennifer Hornyak. The Montreal-based artist is beloved for her abstract and figurative work. Her series of floral paintings is made modern by her inspired color palette—this vase of flowers on a tabletop in a combination of creamy white, pink, coral, and eucalyptus blue blossoms against a deep ultramarine blue backdrop. Hornyak’s signature use of oil paint is thickly applied and layers of glaze add both texture and depth as does the linen canvas.

“We cannot reproduce nature, nor should we want to. All we can do is see and feel and aim to transcend ourselves.” Jennifer Hornyak

Jennifer Hornyak studied at the Grimsby School of Art in England. In 1961, she moved to Montreal where she attended McGill University, the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, and the Centre Saidye Bronfman. Hornyak has exhibited throughout North America and Europe. Her work is represented in many private and corporate collections including Bombardier Transport, Burroughs Wellcome, McCarthy Tétrault, Power Corporation, and Hyatt Regency Hotel.
