About Porcelain Urn
This white ceramic urn is both figurative and decorative with hand painted pink, blue and gold accents. The eclectic artwork of award winning ceramicist Joon Hee Kim has received international acclaim. She is known for her superbly crafted hand shaped pieces that embrace her own rich Korean culture and yet also reflect a modern sensibility. This oval shaped ceramic urn is finely detailed and hand painted. Tiny faces, symbols and shell-like pieces adorn the exterior and frame a doll-like face on one side; a checkboard pattern on the other. The white porcelain provides a neutral background for the pink and deep blue painted accents. The entire piece is elevated by delicate gold paint edging. The lid of the urn is decorated with three small seated figures.
"Human" is not a subject to be depicted but a metaphorical charge animating my practice—a condition, fragmented, inherited, and in motion. My work in ceramics attends to this condition by interrogating the ways in which intersectional identity is lived and felt, shaped through the convergence of race, gender, displacement, and cultural memory.” Joon Hee Kim
“ A striking display of ceramic innovation both strong and personal content and technical virtuosity. The work exemplifies a powerful commitment to her craft with tremendous momentum.” Bruce Cochrane, Professor Emeritus of Ceramics at Sheridan College, Judge--Best of Ceramics Award
