About Nebula XL

The uniquely magical kinetic sculptures of American artist Lyman Whitaker translate an unseen force of nature—the wind into a visible, graceful and mesmerizing dance. As a master in the discipline of kinetic sculpture, Whitaker’s elegant artwork is known around the world. Meticulously hand crafted, his wind sculptures are forged from stainless steel and copper. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the wild red rock desert in Southern Utah, his studio creates wind sculptures whose aesthetic is often inspired by nature’s designs. Whitaker begins each sculpture’s form by simply cutting a shape out of paper and then using that as a template for the metal cutout. Individual pieces are forged, arranged and welded together using complex balancing and ball bearings which allow the organic and geometric shapes to move in the slightest breeze.

“I care deeply about our ecosystem and the world’s societal impact on it. As an artist, I can express my concern for the survival of our planet through a creative medium. The Wind Sculptures offer a comforting release from our fast-paced lives with their calm serenity and playfulness." Lyman Whitaker

Lyman Whitaker has a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Utah. There he studied under Advard Fairbanks and Angelo Carvaglia, learning classical sculpture techniques as well as contemporary design.
Whitaker has been practicing sculpture for over 50 years. His early work consisted of traditional bronzes, small mobiles and public fountains. Since the mid 1980’s he has focused on wind sculptures which are handmade kinetic art that responds to the changing currents of the wind. Lyman Whitaker's work can be found in select fine art galleries and in private collections throughout the United States and abroad, as well as in many notable museums and public spaces.
