About Freeway

This surreal contemporary photograph of a highway is pink, purple and yellow.

An empty four-lane highway—the iridescent bright pink lines defining each lane stretches into the distance against a deep purple background. A cloud-filled sky in fluorescent yellow and deep pink frames the picture plane. Mark Bartkiw, a Canadian photographer, uses a special process for printmaking that was popular in the 20th century. His chromogenic or ‘C-prints’ have three layers of gelatin in cyan, magenta, and yellow that react with light to produce colour. Bartkiw’s ‘personal vision’ is bold and imaginative. His photographs feature incredible dream-like imagery—often surreal—in both content and colour. He is fascinated with the idea of presenting an altered reality and creating fantastical worlds.

This Chromogenic print is sealed between dibond and plexiglass. This image is available in three sizes: 30 x 30 inches, $2,800 (Edition of 8); 36 x 36 inches, $3,200 (Edition of 5 with AP); 42 x 42 inches, $4,000. (Edition of 3 with AP). Please allow up to 3 weeks for delivery of an alternate size.

“The imaginary world has unlimited potential. When I reached back into my childhood, where I could create anything and was totally in charge, I created scenes and worlds that were my alternate and necessary reality. As an artist, this has evolved into the opportunity to revive play in order to create implied narratives.” Mark Bartkiw

Mark Bartkiw studied photography at Sheridan College.
