This dramatic abstract painting of a tree set against a black sky is from Montreal born artist Mel Davis. In rich colours of forest and lime green, punctuated by white and black, Davis uses long brush strokes to create a sense of movement in this landscape. She was influenced by the colourful and fluid work of French masters like Matisse, but her adventurous use of colour, form and pattern is uniquely her own. This is one of a series.

She graduated from Concordia University with a BFA in 1998. A short study trip at the Slade School of Art in London was followed by a move to California where she acquired her MFA at the San Francisco Institute of Art. Davis still lives in the Bay area. Her work has been shown in both solo and group shows in Canada and the U.S.
