About Brutalist Wall Sculpture

This contemporary ceramic architectural wall sculpture is handmade.

Michelle Mendlowitz is a gifted ceramic artist and teacher whose work has been exhibited in Toronto for more than two decades. As a maker, her extensive oeuvre includes both functional and sculptural objects hand-made from clay. She is inspired by organic form, ‘landscapes, nature, architecture and the human form.’ This highly detailed, textural and layered wall sculpture illustrates her love of architectural form. The use of various glazes in white and deep blue highlights carved features in the composition. The palette of the background is a dark gray.

“As an artist, I am intrigued by layers. As a maker, process plays an important role in my work. Each working stage in a piece brings a new layer, and each action leaves its mark on the finished results.” Michelle Mendlowitz

Michelle Mendlowitz graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Design in 2005. She lives in Toronto, where she continues a studio practice, exhibiting and teaching.
