Nie Jian Bing

(b.1968, Nanjing, China) Nie Jian Bing challenges our cultural ideas of East and West. In his work, Bing begins by recreating all or part of a well known painting by a master of western art history -- Velasquez, Rubens, Vermeer. Bing then superimposes an artist’s copy grid, acupuncture meridians and Chinese characters on the represented figure. Bing's paintings offer a twist on classic portraiture and art history. Trained in France, Nie Jian Bing divides his time between Montréal, Paris and China. His work is held in public and private collections in Canada and abroad.
