About Latte Javelin
As a mature artist, Roch Smith is still, on occasion ‘playing’ with toys. With his small bronze sculptures, the Toronto artist often cleverly uses toys to express social issues. This table-top sculpture features an ancient warrior prepared for battle, a large shield in one hand and what appears to be a stir stick in the other—a substitute for a javelin. Is Smith making a social comment on the popular ‘no foam, extra hot’ coffee culture? You bet! The toy figure sized sculpture is mounted on a block of wood painted blue..“Toys have always fascinated me – how they function and how their meanings can be ‘read’. He received a BFA (Honours Sculpture) from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (ECIAD - 1997) and an MFA from York University (2003). A teacher as well as an artist, he has taught classes at the University of Waterloo, ECIAD and York University. He currently manages and operates the bronze and aluminum foundry at York University. Roch Smith has exhibited throughout Canada and in the US. His work is included in private, corporate and museum collections.
