About Silent Drift ed.1/2
This figurative table top bronze sculpture of a kayaker is by Roch Smith. In his acclaimed sculptural practice, the Canadian artist often tackles big themes in life –disequilibrium, work and play. Roch Smith uses scale—small toy-like figures to explore them. In a new series, small bronze figures interact with various watercraft. This piece features a lone male, casually dressed, sitting in a kayak. He doesn’t have any paddles. He is staring ahead, drifting silently.
Smith has an enduring connection to time spent in nature and often returns to that imagery in his work. Edition of two.
“The latest works have some instances where I was thinking of the notion of quiet contemplation… perhaps looking out onto a lake or forest scene.” Roch Smith
Roch Smith received a BFA (Honours Sculpture) from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (ECIAD - 1997) and an MFA from York University (2003). A teacher as well as an artist, he has taught classes at the University of Waterloo, ECIAD and York University. He currently manages and operates the bronze and aluminum foundry at York University.
