About Chestnut
Highly regarded for his luminous, ethereal landscapes reminiscent of the work of John Constable, Peter Hoffer has created a series of tree ‘portraits.’ Here a single chestnut tree in full foliage fills the frame. Hoffer’s signature gestural brushstrokes and layers of paint are applied complete with paint drippings. The use of charcoal adds texture and depth. The tree and surrounding countryside are rendered in a rich palette of greens, yellows, browns and sienna that stand out against the soft blue cloud-filled sky.“I wanted to do the landscape in a manner in which it is personified. Where the tree becomes the individual, even playing on some clichés." Peter Hoffer
