About Harunobu
This contemporary landscape painting of a tree was created by a Canadian artist.Peter Hoffer is respected in the international art world as a fine contemporary artist for his ethereal, atmospheric landscapes.
This mixed media piece of a tree resplendent in a joyful palette of soft yellow, melon, and green stands seul against a rich background of turquoise blues and greens. The surface of Hoffer’s paintings often includes markings, scratches, and drippings which add detail and visible texture. Influenced by the 19th-century practice of Salon artists in Paris who would ‘refresh’ paintings that hadn’t sold with another coat of varnish, he added multiple layers of resin to his work. The varnish coating adds attractive reflective qualities to the work but also makes a classic image appear modern. This piece is likely named after an 18th-century Japanese artist, Harunobu, a cultural icon who created woodblock print art.
“I wanted to do the landscape in a manner in which it is personified. Where the tree becomes the individual, even playing on some clichés." Peter Hoffer
“There is a sense of painterly surface and medium as well as of literary depth and meaning.” Lynn Moore, The Montreal Gazette
