About Nuthatch III

This contemporary figurative mixed media composition of a bird is by Peter Hoffer.

Peter Hoffer’s realistic artwork is masterful and exquisite in detail. The Canadian artist has exhibited in major cities throughout the world. This is one in a series of ‘portraits’ he has created of a Nuthatch, a small bird indigenous to North America and Europe. Using mixed media on a panel, the little blue, purple and white feathered bird sits on the branch of a tree surrounded by a ‘halo’ of white. The colour palette of the backdrop is a vivid mixture of bright yellow highlighted by black graphic markings, and drips of red and blue paint. Hoffer’s bird portraits are reminiscent of the tradition of 18th and 19th century artists who often painted prized birds and animals.

"While we admire the beauty of the work, we are aware of a modern artist asking us to consider the process and the act of creation itself.“ Lynn Moore, Art Critic, Montreal Gazette
