About Plum Tree

This contemporary mixed media landscape featuring a fruit tree is by Peter Hoffer.

The ephemeral beauty of a plum tree cloaked in spring blossoms is captured in this landscape by Canadian artist Peter Hoffer. Renowned for his romantic landscapes, Hoffer created a series of tree ‘portraits’ intended to convey the idea of a tree as ‘an individual’ each possessing unique ‘personalities.’
This plum tree is rendered in a bright orange, melon and purple palette, which stands out against the vivid turquoise sky and the muted earthy tones of the land surrounding it. Markings and scratches—a signature of Hoffers’ work, add visible character. Layers of resin reminiscent of the old masters add sheen and texture, but the effect here is wholly contemporary. Peter Hoffer initially studied sculpture in art school and, early in his artistic career, became interested in the effect that using different materials had on his own work.

“I was interested in materials…did some work at a museum restoring old paintings. What was interesting was not the painting…it was the cracking varnish, discolouring, the warping canvases. So, I started looking at the material in a sculptural sense.” Peter Hoffer

Peter Hoffer holds an MFA from Concordia University and degrees from the University of Guelph and OCAD University. Hoffer has lived and worked in Toronto, New York City, Paris, Montreal and Berlin. He has exhibited widely at art fairs in Basel, Toronto, New York, Stockholm, London, Milan, Amsterdam and Hong Kong.
