About Kill Your Darlings No.15
This contemporary abstract painting was inspired by nature.Canadian artist Sandra Goldie’s lyrical paintings’ colours and expressive style are informed by the beauty of the natural world.
The form is a result, she believes, of her early exposure to the freeform rhythm of jazz music. Goldie begins each piece by creating a backdrop on the bare canvas with sienna or ‘terre verte’ (green earth) colours. Gestural brushstrokes and calligraphic markings—layered forms in hues that hint at the shape of leaves, flowers, petals and vines ‘dance’ throughout the space.
The colour palette is a rich tapestry of greens, aubergine, cranberry, creamy yellows, and orange against a deep turquoise-blue backdrop. One of a series.
“ Kill your Darlings”. It’s a phrase used by filmmakers and writers to describe the process of removing parts that don’t serve the story. I often have to take a breath and remove what I think is a beautiful passage to make the entire composition work. I can then rework the picture. Sometimes you have to be ruthless to make something beautiful.” Sandra Goldie
Sandra Goldie pursued her dream of painting after a career as an interior designer by completing a BFA and graduating with distinction from Concordia University. While completing her degree, she opened a gallery for emerging artists in Montreal which she successfully grew for nearly a decade. During this time, the gallery participated in numerous art fairs, including Art Toronto. This second career as a gallerist followed her to the County and Oeno Gallery, where she continued to work with exceptional artists, both emerging and established. A decision to pursue a more personal career has put Goldie back in the studio. Her accumulated experiences from both the design world and the art world now influence her painting.
