About Interlace Crimson Red

This contemporary red metal sculpture by Shayne Dark was inspired by nature.

Forged in steel and coated in a deep crimson red paint, this striking sculpture by Canada’s Shayne Dark once again masterfully marries a natural form with an industrial material. For decades, Dark’s eclectic artwork has been inspired by the natural world that surrounds his home. His unique vision of using strong, raw materials such as steel has elevated his sculpture’s design and singled him out as a superb artist.
The Interlace series consists of multiple steel rods whose form emulates a farmer’s sheaf of wheat. The use of a bright iridescent colour serves to highlight the dynamic and elegant form.

“Experiencing the natural world will often give me a germ of an idea, and then I run with it.” Shayne Dark

“Shayne Dark’s work results from a rhythmic and organic process involving ideas, feelings, images, formal play, and structural necessity. Every aspect of the process has the potential to hold meaning, to draw upon and focus our physical and perceptual experience of the world.” Helen Zenith, New Zones Gallery

Shayne Dark was the artist in residence at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in 2016, following a successful residency at the Albright-Knox and Buffalo Botanical Garden in 2015 and a feature article on his work in Sculpture magazine.
