About Depth Markers #3
This contemporary abstract mixed media composition is by Shireen Kamran.A Montreal-based artist, Shireen Kamran’s lyrical and expressive artwork has attracted an audience both here and internationally. Using a thoughtfully curated colour palette and dynamic form, Kamran’s narrative explores the experience of cultural identity, displacement and our collective memory of people and places.
This piece displays her signature gestural brushstrokes in a soft creamy/golden palette that is highlighted by deep blue, white and black. Paint drips and calligraphic markings add symbolic detail and visible texture. Depth markers are devices used to indicate depth of water and warn swimmers of potential dangers. One of a series.
“I like imperfections, scars, marks, cracks, and crevices that come with lived experiences. Colour is my main domain, I play a lot with colours that can range from ancient reds, greys, khaki blues to ivory whites or lighter.” Shireen Kamran
Shireen Kamran received a BSc. degree from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan and a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal. Her work is held in private collections in Canada and abroad.
