About Disciples and Sages #1

This contemporary mixed media composition was influenced by cubism.

Inspired by the rich history of her Pakistani heritage, Shireen Kamran creates dynamic and enigmatic compositions. Her style and chosen form also references early artistic influences—Picasso and De Kooning among them. This horizontal work displays her own visual language which is both colourful and textured—using pigments, acrylic and collage on canvas. Colour is always a key focus—the palette here is dominated by earth tones complemented by khaki blues, soft grays and melon against a neutral backdrop.

“I infuse my paintings with paper collages, torn drawings or random bits of paper with interesting paints and drips. They are instrumental in adding depth and texture to the works and sometimes help to complete the painting.”
Shireen Kamran

Shireen Kamran was born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1954. She received a BSc. degree from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan and a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal. Her work is held in private collections in Canada and abroad.
