About Nidium 1.5m

This unique contemporary outdoor sculpture inspired by nature is interactive.

Oeno Gallery is proud to host the North American debut of this extraordinary interactive sculpture, “which seamlessly blends art, technology, and ecological consciousness”. Viewers can actively experience a ‘dialogue’ with nature.
Art and science have co-existed since antiquity. SPLACES Studio’s innovative approach to art re-imagines its relationship to technology and the natural world. Nidium is made from 1,000 hand-woven willow branches, integrated with warm LED lighting. The sculpture emits light and sound generated by neural networks inside the ‘nest’ that respond to environmental input and human presence. If you speak to the sculpture, it listens and replies with a soft, evolving sonic response. Evoking the delicate shelter of a bird’s nest, Nidium explores ‘interspecies care, ecological fragility, and the intersection of nature and technology.’ The name derives from the Latin word “nidum,” meaning both “nest” and “home”.

“These sculptural works sit somewhere between art and science. They are nature-driven—natural phenomena does the work. Sometimes it’s the wind, sometimes it’s birds singing. We capture that sound as data and then turn it into form, colour, light or sound in the sculpture. So the piece isn’t just about nature, it’s actually ‘running’ on it.” Khristina Ots, Curator and Researcher

Founded in late 2023 and headquartered in Italy, SPLACES.STUDIO is a collective of artists, scientists, engineers, and researchers from all over Europe who work together to explore the intersection of nature, art and technology. The studio creates interactive installations that transform natural phenomena – such as wind, sky and motion – into immersive sculptures using algorithms, AI and sensor systems. The goal is to foster empathy, forge deeper connections and dialogue between humans and nature.
