This contemporary tabletop vessel is by Steven Heinemann. This major Canadian artist is widely known for redefining the boundaries of ceramic art. Steven Heinemann’s superb technical craftsmanship has won him international attention. He uses slip cast molding—a technique that allows him to hand build shapes that cannot be easily made on a potter’s wheel. The elegant, elongated, organic form of this piece is inspired by nature. Its rich, red, shiny surface is achieved through meticulous layering of glazes. A fine black line defines the edge of the vessel.
“This ‘behaviour’ of the material which does not seek your permission, already suggests to me a dance of nature, mind and culture.” Steven Heinemann
“The ceramic sculptures of Steven Heinemann are astonishing, mysterious enigmas inviting thoughts about being and non-being, the tangible and the intangible. His thirty-five-year practice is deeply rooted in the principles of the 1960s studio craft movement, which prioritizes process, material, and the non-functional object to create autonomous sculpture.”
