About Untitled Aqua Tilted Bowl
This contemporary ceramic aqua coloured bowl is by Steven Heinemann.Celebrated internationally for his technical wizardry with clay and his visionary aesthetic, Steven Heinemann has consistently challenged the boundaries of his art form. Working with clay, he often uses ‘slip cast moulding’—a technique that is used for shapes that cannot be easily built on a potter’s wheel. By building up fine layers of clay and allowing each one to dry, he attains incredible textures and variations in the surface as they naturally shrink and crack. This has become Heinemann’s signature in his decades-long exploration of minimalist form, colour and texture. The simple, elegant, round shape of this bowl has a smooth white exterior and a soft aqua coloured interior that showcases his unique vision.
The base of the bowl sits at a slight angle, affording the viewer a clear picture of the highly textured interior.
“My work generally is, of course, the product of an obsessive. I can and will obsess over whatever’s in front of me—so, clearly, I try to be picky about what’s in front of me.” Steven Heinemann
“With Steven, you can tell he’s looking at a particular shape or form and exploring it as much as he can in order to discover what shape or form means as a universal concept. I think people are fascinated by that creative process he’s set out for himself.” Dr. Rachel Gotlieb, Curator and historian
Steven Heinemann earned an MFA from Alfred University, NY, in 1983 and has taught in Canada and the US. Heinemann has exhibited continuously since his first solo exhibition at the Ontario Crafts Council in 1982. His work is held in museums the world over. Heinemann has received many national and international awards.
