Master ceramicist Steven Heinemann continues his exploration of the potential of the vessel, an ancient form, with this series of untitled pieces. The organic oval shape is inspired by nature. The bright red exterior offers a vivid contrast to the earthy-coloured interior that displays Heinemann’s signature layers of paint, cracked and textured.

“The surface becomes physical and begins to suggest an organic process; the familiar bowl becomes an arena in which an event, whether growth or decay, creates a separate skin in the process of change or transformation.” Steven Heinemann

Steven Heinemann earned an MFA from Alfred University, NY, in 1983 and has taught in Canada and the US. Since his first solo exhibition in 1982 at the Ontario Crafts Council, he has exhibited continuously. Heinemann’s work is held in museums the world over. He has received many national and international awards including the Saidye Bronfman Award, Canada’s highest recognition of achievement in contemporary craft.
