About Untitled Bowl with Collar Edge
This contemporary ceramic oval-shaped bowl was handbuilt by Steven Heinemann. For the celebrated Canadian ceramicist Steven Heinemann, the humble shape of a bowl has always been an endless source of inspiration. Working with clay, he often uses ‘slip cast moulding’—a technique that is used for shapes that cannot be easily built on a potter’s wheel. By building up fine layers of clay and allowing each one to dry, he attains incredible textures and variations in the surface as they naturally shrink and crack. This has become Heinemann’s signature in his decades-long exploration of minimalist form, colour and texture. The elegant, long, and narrow oval form of this bowl is enhanced by a dark and light palette. The exterior features a smooth flat finish with a ‘collar’ edge; the interior illustrates Heinemann’s signature aesthetic—a highly textured cracked finish in black that reveals a lighter coloured layer.
“My work generally is, of course, the product of an obsessive. I can and will obsess over whatever’s in front of me—so, clearly, I try to be picky about what’s in front of me.” Steven Heinemann
“Heinemann is compelled by clay’s potency to reveal contained space:” Heidi McKenzie, Ceramic Artist
