About Ether Series Medium Gold Grey
This contemporary gold and grey coloured glass vase is by Susan Rankin. The magical optical qualities of glass and light become objects of beauty in the hands of Canadian artist Susan Rankin. Rankin creates contemporary hand-blown glass artwork made from translucent glass that is masterfully manipulated to add distinctive patterns. Here, powder-coated glass bits in gold and grey hues are layered and thin trails of glass threads add lyrical detail.
The form is organic—the finish of each piece is highly polished and naturally reflects light. The vases come in small, medium and tall sizes, which makes for an attractive grouping. Rankin chose the name Ether for the clear, clean air that lives above the clouds.
“I looked up the definition of the word Ether, and it totally caught my imagination …thinking about the idea of rarified elements, upper regions in Space.
A medium that, in the wave theory of light, permeates all space and transmits transverse waves.” Susan Rankin
Susan Rankin graduated with honors from Sheridan College, Oakville, Ontario, in 1989 and received a three-year artist-in-residence at the Harbourfront Centre glass studio. Rankin has studied glass at the Pilchuck Glass School, Haystack School of Craft and Penland School of Craft in the U.S. She currently teaches glassblowing at the Haliburton School of the Arts, Haliburton, Ontario.
