About Fetch
This indoor tabletop figurative sculpture includes a dog and is forged from bronze that is patinated. The award-winning sculptures of Susan Valyi were often created from an imaginative use of ‘found’ materials. Her recent discovery of a nearby forgery has allowed her to explore a new medium—bronze.
This is one of a series of figurative pieces she has hand-forged and patinated in a rich turquoise-blue colour. Here a simple human figure stands on a pedestal, one hand by his side and in an amusing ‘twist’ a small dog sits on his shoulder.
Valyi is known for injecting humour into her work—a distinctive and delightful hallmark of her approach to sculpture that always begins with a sketch.
“I’ve been asked to give lectures on humour in art and I’m quite fascinated with the subject. It’s not something you can plan And it’s contrary to the perception that art has to be serious to be taken seriously. I work until I please myself and if I have an audience, all the better. Audience for me is very important. I’m interested in uncomplicated art that doesn’t need a lot of explanation to understand.”
