About Cross/Cultural Now#2

This colourful contemporary painting and its complimentary wall sculpture are by Yvonne Lammerich. In her decades-long exploration of a visual language, the Canadian artist often makes references to history and includes architectural elements. The acrylic painting is composed of graphic shapes arranged in a dynamic pattern. Rendered in bright colours—orange, deep red, blue, yellow and gray the form pops against a bright white background. The compelling visual narrative continues with two wall sculptures that echo the painting’s form in bright white. One of a series.

“When I began as an artist to reflect on my place in the world – where and who we are – I found that these reflections began to coincide with how I understood the practices of painting and sculpture, photography and performance. I mean by this that while I found myself engaging with all of these practices, I also realized that this engagement could not be limited to any one of them.” Yvonne Lammerich

Yvonne Lammerich was born in Germany in 1946. She emigrated with her family to Canada in 1959.
