Elegant gestural brushstrokes drift across the canvas in this contemporary painting by Yvonne Lammerich. Rendered in a striking palette, the backdrop for this piece is a rich burnished gold, the brushstrokes are royal blue, black and white. In the 1970s Lammerich was already developing her own unique visual language and had begun to explore profound questions about humanity that she expressed using non-representational form and bright colours.

“I realized that to make my work meaningful to me I had to pursue these questions irrespective of art world trends, questions that were at the core of my own short history in post-war Germany before coming to Canada in 1959.” Yvonne Lammerich

Yvonne Lammerich was born in Germany in 1946. She emigrated with her family to Canada in 1959. Lammerich attended the Ontario College of Art and also received a master’s in art history from Concordia University in Quebec. She furthered her studies and acquired a Ph.D. from the Université du Québec à Montréal. While pursuing her own art, she also taught at York University, OCAD University, the University of Lethbridge, and Zayed University in Dubai. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and is held in numerous private and public collections.
