Artist Talk with Kristina Ots of SPLACES Now Available to Watch
Earlier this fall, Oeno Gallery welcomed Kristina Ots, curator of the European art collective SPLACES, for a public artist talk and guided walk through the SPLACES installations currently on view at the gallery. The full recording of this talk is now available to watch on Oeno Gallery’s YouTube channel.
In the talk, Ots explored how art, science, and technology can help reconnect us with nature in the age of the Anthropocene. She introduced SPLACES.STUDIO’s nature-driven, interactive sculptures—works that listen to wind, water, birds, stones, and even cosmic weather, translating environmental data into evolving light and sound.
The conversation highlighted several key projects, including Solux, a series of willow-like reeds that respond to wind and water through light and sound; Nidium, a biomorphic “nest” that reflects on urban bird life and our shared planetary home; Black Nidium, a poetic monument to extinct bird species informed by aviation data; and Megalith, an interactive stone sculpture that allows viewers to “hear” the long memory of a rock through sound. Large-scale data-driven works such as Fluxate and data.relic were also discussed.
Throughout the talk, Ots addressed SPLACES.STUDIO’s collaborative process with scientists across multiple disciplines, as well as the studio’s philosophical and ethical engagement with posthumanism, artificial intelligence, climate change, and extinction.
Following the talk, attendees were led on a guided walk through the installations, experiencing firsthand how the works shift and respond to their surroundings. The full artist talk and guided walk is now available to view on Oeno Gallery’s YouTube channel.
