Deborah Root Featured in Picton Gazette Article "Seeing it Whole"
We’re pleased to share that Oeno Gallery artist Deborah Root was recently featured in the Picton Gazette in an article titled “Seeing it Whole”. The article explores Root’s distinctive approach to painting, where she draws on memory and history.
Currently on view in Oeno Gallery’s exhibition Summering is Root’s December in Oahu: a Dream of Victory, a 36” tondo that resembles a cruise ship porthole. In it, two seniors vacationing in Hawaii are haunted by the spectre of WWII: Japanese bombers loom overhead, recalling Pearl Harbour, while Hawaiian dancers and tourists are rendered miniature, underscoring how war and trauma linger in memory and shape our perceptions of place.

As the Gazette noted, Root’s paintings foreground subjectivity, dissonance, and estrangement, while at the same time allowing viewers to “see it whole.” Her use of fractured planes, expressive figures, and bold colour invites us to step inside the shifting perspectives of her subjects and piece together layered histories.
