Tonya Hart's Sky Tower sculpture, installed in Pouch Cove, Newfoundland.
Oeno Gallery congratulates artist Tonya Hart on the installation of Sky Tower, a 48 x 48 x 105-inch sculpture in stainless steel, brass, and acrylic, now on view at Pouch Cove, Newfoundland.
Sky Tower (Weather Station) visualizes a large-scale tower inspired by the internal structure of a microscope. As viewers approach, reflections on stainless-steel discs bring the sky closer, while colored plates rising into the sky create a “rose-colored glasses” effect, offering a unique view of the changing sky throughout the day and seasons. Much like a microscope or telescope, Sky Tower expands and amplifies space, revealing alternate perspectives on the environment.
The Pouch Cove Public Art Committee (PCPAC), a volunteer group dedicated to enriching Pouch Cove’s cultural landscape through outdoor art, has selected Tonya Hart’s Sky Tower as this year’s Plinth Project sculpture. Funded by ArtsNL, private donors, and the Town of Pouch Cove, the project invited Canadian artists to submit proposals, ultimately shortlisting three. Public viewings of the models encouraged community conversations on public art. Since 2020, PCPAC has commissioned four distinct artworks, creating opportunities for public engagement and artistic appreciation in Pouch Cove. The Plinth Project rotates sculptures annually, showcasing diverse artistic expressions that connect residents and visitors alike.
