This elegant abstract sculpture is by Toronto artists, Ann Bartok and Olena Kassian. Finely coiled ribbons of stainless-steel sit atop a large cylinder reflecting the sunlight. Friends and collaborators since they first met in 2012, Bartok and Kassian are now known as Barkas. Together, they are inspired to create unique large-scale pieces from recycled materials.
“Just Breathe combines the cool calm of the stainless-steel post and the gentle movement of the coiled plumes which suggest exhalation. It tells us to look, relax and breathe.” Olena and Ann
Born in England in 1941, Ann Bartok studied art and worked as an artist before emigrating to Canada and establishing a studio in Toronto. As a multimedia artist, she received large commercial commissions in both North and South America. Olena Kassian was born in Munich in a displaced person camp in 1947. She was just a child when she came to Canada. In later years, she became a successful illustrator publishing 16 children’s books. After retirement, she returned to make art full time.
