About Haptic Series Cobalt & Pearl No 2

This contemporary ceramic vessel in cobalt blue was created by Bill Greaves.

Hand-formed and glazed; the tactile organic shapes of this Canadian ceramist are often inspired by the materials he uses. This piece has a pleasing mushroom-like form. Greaves' unique ceramic vessels are coiled, scraped, and carved. The addition of multiple layers of glaze builds tactile surface depth. Haptic literally means ‘sense of touch’. One of a series.

“The way I work is hand building so clay dries as you work with it so it’s constantly changing its properties as you work with it so there’s this great back and forth that resists the ability to produce exactly what you intended to produce. Similarly from glaze…the combinations of two or three glazes. I talk about it as one plus b equals pineapple because they just do these magical things when you put them together.” Bill Greaves

Bill Greaves originally trained as an architect at Yale University, Bill studied ceramics at Alex Yeung Studio in Toronto from 2017-2019 before setting up his studio near Consecon, Ontario, in 2020.
