About Wall Composition 5.1
The contemporary horizontal panels of this wall composition are handmade in ceramic. On his Instagram post, Bill Greaves has a series of photographs taken from the shoreline of his family farm. The photos record the horizon line—that imaginary line that appears to divide the water from the sky. This powerful imagery appears to have found a new expression in the form of a ceramic ‘mural’—effectively an abstracted landscape. In his own ceramic work, Greaves is often inspired by the colours, patterns and forms found in nature. This series of five panels—each one hand-formed and joined with a vertical seam creates a dynamic and modern horizontal composition. As with much of his ceramic art, the panels have a distinctive ripple texture—the result of hand-carving the surface of the clay.
One panel has attractive markings that are naturally caused by a particular glaze that shrinks and bubbles up as it dries, leaving behind a ‘dry river bed pattern.’ The palette of this piece is earthy and neutral, highlighted by a deep blue.
“I’m so interested in the idea of murals… the idea of ‘scale’ and moving ceramics into another dynamic form. Wall panels give you scale.“ Bill Greaves
