About Breeze
This contemporary white sculptural wall hanging was handmade. For more than three decades, internationally acclaimed artist Chung Im-Kim has woven two worlds together. The Canadian textile artist was born in South Korea, and much of her inspiration is still drawn from the beautiful textiles she saw in her youth. The dynamic organic form and colours found in nature also inform her art. This alluring contemporary white on white tapestry was hand-sewn using a traditional Bojaji patchwork stitch to join together small pieces of industrial felt. Each square is pulled taut to create a visible dimension--a raised pattern and tension in the design. White ink—screen printed adds expressive detail to the fabric.
“Every day I walk in the backyard, and sometimes I pick up things. And if it has a very interesting structure, I study the structure of that. I really enjoy natural phenomena and often use natural imagery in my art.” Chung-Im Kim
“Kim’s felt conceptions bridge the artistic worlds of craft, design, and fine art.” Dr. Jessica Veveers, Art Historian
Chung-Im Kim has received accolades and exhibitions for her work from prestigious institutions such as the Boston Museum of Art, the invitational Bojagi Exhibition at the Suwon Park Museum in Korea, the Museum Nagele in the Netherlands, and the Belgian Triennial Contemporary Textile Arts Exposition. Kim's exquisite design and execution have been honoured with top prizes and awards in many international art competitions. One of her works was selected as a gift from Canada to the president of China. She received her MFA from Seoul Women's University in 1984 and has taught at OCAD University in Toronto since 2006.
